Botox Treatments

Botox treatments are a safe and effective way to remove wrinkles on the face with quick results and little to no recovery time.

Can you please describe what Botox is and what it is used for?

Dr. John Vitale: Yes. In layman’s terms, Botox is a toxin, botulinum, which, once injected, paralyzes the nerve endings around surrounding tissues, causing the tissues to relax.

In some cases, can Botox be used as an alternative to plastic surgery?

Dr. John Vitale: Yes. In a lot of instances where you have minor adjustments, like wrinkles in the forehead, if you want a brow lift, have your eyebrows lifted on both sides, or get rid of crow’s feet around your eyes, Botox is very instrumental in doing that without going into plastic surgery.

Are there any common side effects associated with Botox treatments that people should be aware of?

Dr. John Vitale: Well, there are muscle weakness, some bruising, some bleeding, some pain, some redness, some swelling, sometimes a headache, and sometimes some muscle stiffness, all minor.

What can someone expect during their first Botox treatment? How long does the procedure take? And what is the recovery like?

Dr. John Vitale: Well, the procedure, itself, is rather simple. What we do in our office is we place a preanesthetic in the affected area that we’re going to work on. Let’s say we’re going to remove the wrinkles on the forehead. We would place some Benzocaine over the area or maybe ice it up a little bit and cool it down, and then we just inject with a very small needle. We do multiple injections in specific areas around the wrinkles in the forehead, and that whole procedure from start to finish takes under 10 minutes. The recovery rate is rather simple. I think that other than the initial pricks with the needle and maybe a little bit of redness and swelling, over the next 24 hours, you really don’t even realize that you’ve had it.

How soon after Botox treatment will you see results? And how long do the effects of these treatments last?

Dr. John Vitale: Okay, so with Botox, the maximum effect you would receive would be within 72 hours. You would continue to get better looking aesthetically for 72 hours, and then you peak at that point. Over the next four to six months, you would start to get those results diminished. The expectancy, generally, is somewhere between four and six months for people with Botox.
